First I'd like to thank Jim at Bethany House Publisher for my review copy of Kim's book Fields of Grace.
I have been trying something new with the books I receive to review. I'm not reading what the book is about on the back cover. So far it's been an enjoyable adventure. I did this with Fields of Grace and wasn't disappointed!
I know very little about the Mennonite faith, but learned about the old faith, to a degree, that was brought over from Russia. It seems very similar to the Amish faith.
Reinhardt and Lillian Vogt are heading to America with their 3 boys and Reinhardt's adopted brother, Eli. They are leaving to protect Henrik from joining the war. The trip over is costly and lives are lost.
Eli and Lillian enter into an agreement to make sure their lives start off on the right foot here in this new land. They head to Kansas ready to start a new life and make what's left of their fractured lives work.
I found this story compelling. It's a historical novel, but a genre I haven't read before. I found the way Eli chose to honor Reinhardt and Lillian was a beautiful example of love. He also loves the boys, as much as he can without putting his heart too much on the line.
Lillian, for her part, makes the most of living in a sod house and living with her broken heart along with her oldest son's frustration. She is grieving her loss and trying to figure out what her new life holds for her and her boys.
How they manage to balance their lives the way they do is amazing to me. I never would've survived living in those times. The plains they live on with the weather elements they had to deal with is a vital part of this story. Lillian & Eli's future lives depend on the harvest that is to come.

I never read the back of books anymore. I remember once that the back of the book gave away so much information. One of the characters died it revealed but it didn't happen until the last 3rd of the book. I was very disappointed.
