Sabina Mancari never questioned her life as the daughter of Chicago’s leading mob boss until bullets tear apart her world and the man she thought she loved turns out to be an undercover Prohibition agent. Ambushes, bribes, murder, prostitution—all her life, her father sheltered her from his crimes, but now she can no longer turn away from the truth. Maybe Lorenzo, the fiancé who barely paid her any attention in the last two years, has the right idea by planning to escape their world. But can she truly turn her back on her family?
All his life, Lorenzo’s family assumed he would become a priest, but he has different ideas—marrying Sabina and pursuing a career in the law. Despite his morals, he knows at the core he isn’t so unlike his mafiosi father and brothers. Has he, in trying to protect Sabina, forced her into the arms of the Prohibition agent bent on tearing her family apart? How can they rebuild what has so long been neglected and do it in the shadow of the dark empire of the Mafia?
Shadowed Loyalty, set amid the glitz and scandal of the Roaring Twenties, examines what love really means and how we draw lines between family and our own convictions, especially when following one could mean losing the other.
First there's Sabina who was initially frustrating, but as her story began to be told, her choices made so much sense. And then there's Enzo. His only goal is to get out of the mafia world that he and Sabina's family have built, and take her with him. His heart is splayed all over the page and all we can do is root for him!
There are so many characters in this story who all play vital roles, but it would take all day to talk about my thoughts on each one: Manny, Rosa, Mary, Izzy, and more. Trust me, so many more!! And they're so good to the story. Gosh, message me and we'll talk about them all! And they way they talked... that was one of my favorite parts of the story!
The way the author depicts how the mafia works and their code in regards to family and business. It's played out in all of the pages of this story. It's so strange because there's something appealing about the strong family bonds even though it comes with the worst of stings attached. It's rich in how tight those bonds are and what the whole story hinges on.
Of course, there are important elements throughout the story such as forgiveness and faith. They're Sicilian in the 20s which means a deep Catholic faith so there's a lot of reference to that way of life. All around this book was excellent and I had a hard time putting it down!
I want more of this world. I'm going to say right now that Izzy needs a story! There's got to be one there.
