Excerpt

“I was awful to you when we first met, and you took a bullet for me.”

“I’d do it again,” he replies, repeating what he’d said when he’d been bleeding out on

the floor.

“You make no sense.” I try to pull away, but Lance has a firm hold of my face, and when

I refocus my gaze on him, my heart begins to pound. The look is so intense, so focused that the

entire world melts away around us, leaving only him and me.

“I would do it again,” he repeats once more. “And you are worthy. One day, you will find

a man who treats you exactly as you should be treated. A man who honors God and cherishes

you as his wife. He will only ever touch you because he can’t stand the distance. Because not

touching you—” He brushes his thumb over my lips. “Is pure torment. Anyone would be lucky

to have you in their life, Eliza.”

Lance’s words steal my breath. The voice in my head is screaming at me to run—to put

some distance between us because what is happening is dangerous.

But for the first time, there’s another feeling. A warmth that envelopes me and silences

the doubts. That tells me everything I’ve gone through has led me to this moment. Right into
