Between The Sound And Sea By Amanda Cox

Between the Sound and Sea
by Amanda Cox
Publisher: Revell
ISBN: 9780800742744

Amanda Cox's stories always draw me into a new time and place. Her stories are so rich with the characters and the setting, I can't say no to any of her books! Thanks to Revell for sending me her newest release for review!

Summary:

Every family has its secrets. Josephina "Joey" Harris wouldn't mind if her family still had a few of their own after a lawsuit tarnishes their name. When an opportunity opens to become a temporary keeper of a decommissioned lighthouse on a North Carolina island, she takes the opportunity to escape the scrutiny of her small town to oversee its restoration.

Soon Joey discovers strange notes tucked deep in the crevices of the lighthouse's old stone walls--pages torn from a keeper's log recounting harrowing rescues at sea. When things start to go amiss on the island, locals are convinced that it is the ghost of the lighthouse keeper and his daughter who were lost at sea during World War II.

As Joey sifts through decades of rumors and legends and puts together the pieces of the past, a love story emerges--one that's clearly not over yet.

My Review:

What an incredible story! While I've always enjoyed the author's stories, this one had a bit of a deeper mystery to me than her other ones. Initially I thought it might be heading in a more Jaime Jo Wright kind of way. If you've read any of her books you know what I mean. Thankfully, that wasn't it at all, but there was still quite the mystery!

I really enjoyed getting to know spunky Joey. She had a lot of tenacity, especially after all her family had been through. When her opportunity came to try something a bit new (but not really), while she didn't quite grab the bull by they horns (thank goodness for bffs) she didn't let anything get in the way! It was clear that those who had an interest in Bleakpoint came to care for Joey!

Then we meet Finn and his sweet grandpa Walt. Walt was around during the WWII time and through the telling of the story, we come to find out why this lighthouse and the people who took care of it meant so much to him as a young boy. Trust me when I say your heart will go out to him!

Oh, we can't forget Finn. Gruff and grumble Finn. Does he care more about his grandpa or how he's spending his money? Thankfully throughout the story we get to know him better and what makes him tick. Like Joey, she wanted to say on his good side while also keeping him informed of how his grandpa was doing.

During the restoration of the lighthouse and the keeper's shanty, we meet a variety of characters along the way. Some who stir up crazy ideas, others who help, and a couple who might have some unexpected answers! I was really heartwarming on a number of levels how the story wrapped up. Can't give anything away on that front. The connections made are quite the interesting twist!

But instead of winning the grand prize, she finds herself in the middle of her ex’s plan to acquire her business for a big box retailer.

What she doesn't count on is running into her high school ex, Brock Pearson, who works for the company.

Brock led her to the same table they sat at a few days ago when he asked her to join him for coffee. He pulled out Ginger’s chair and waited for her to sit before taking the seat across from her.

“So, what’s up?” Her smile and eyes were still bright and receptive. He’d almost asked her out again, but he had to focus so that he’d know whether he needed to look somewhere else for Decadent Dough. Time wasn’t on his side if he wanted to secure his mentor, Andrew’s position when he retired.

“We didn’t talk much about my work at Decadent Dough, but I’d like to run something by you to get your thoughts.”

Her eyebrows dipped and her smile weakened. She looked as if she wanted to help him if she could. Was that guilt because of how she ended their relationship?

“Okay, what’s that?”

“I work on the mergers and acquisitions team, and I have a proposition for you.”

“The softness in her eyes vanished and her face sagged. Her disappointment was evident. “The answer is no.”

“You didn’t even hear what I had to say.”

“You’ve said enough. The answer is no. I know enough about Decadent Dough to know I’m not interested. Is that all?” The sides of her lips turned down and her eyebrows crinkled.

“Decadent Dough is looking for businesses to partner with to expand their product offerings.”

Ginger threw her head back and chuckled. “You’re kidding, right? You cannot be serious.” She huffed and blinked and threw her hands in the air. “Is that what this is all about? I thought…well, never mind what I thought. You’re still the same person I thought you were. And as far as Decadent Dough, you and I both know they’re only concerned with themselves and their bottom line. They’ll take my recipes, and I’ll be out on my behind. Nothing about this” she used air quotes“‘deal’ works for me, so thanks for thinking of me, Brock, but that’ll be a hard no. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to get back to running my business.”

Author Interview

1. Did you already enjoy photography before you wrote this story or did you need to learn the ins and outs of it, especially with how technical cameras can be these days?

To be honest, I love the creative aspect of photography and adore snapping shots that inspire me, but I’m SO not into the technical side of it! My husband, however, is definitely a tech guru with all things photography and I see how it brings him joy, so channeled some of his passion for my photographer protagonist. As a result, I ended up going down many rabbit trails as I researched details for the darkroom scenes and found the whole thing utterly fascinating—but I’ll stick with just writing about it!

2. Is Bramble Cottage based off of a cottage or home you're familiar with? Same with the English countryside you created in the story, since you're from the UK?

Yes, I was longing to set a novel in England at some point, and I found the perfect backdrop when I was back there visiting my family in 2019. My sister was living in a quintessential English village in the countryside complete with donkeys wandering down winding roads and thatched cottages galore. As we walked her pugs around the patchwork of surrounding fields, we passed the sweetest pink cottage with a thatched roof and rose trellis. I fell in love with it at once, snapped a photo, and knew I had to incorporate this delightful home into my story.

3. How do you decide what careers your characters will have for each of your stories?

What a great question! Many Christian romantic suspense books include at least one of the main characters in the military, emergency services, or an investigative profession, but I happen to believe there is also a place in this genre for protagonists with “regular” jobs. With the exception of one main character (who was secondary in a previous book and then elbowed his way into the next one as the detective hero!), my “regular” yet fascinating jobs include a teacher, missionary, nurse, realtor, author, architect, chef, orphanage worker, bookstore clerk—and our photographer and pediatric surgeon in Captured in Frame. Their careers usually come to me as I’m going deep with my character research and deciding what best suits their personalities and goals in the storyline… it’s a fun part of the process!

4. Do you ever get to travel for research when developing a story or while writing one?

I love traveling, so I’m always looking for excuses to discover new story settings in the name of research! Other than England for this book, I’ve also researched for my writing in Jamaica, Paris, Maui, the Oregon Coast, Seattle, Mexico, and locally in British Columbia. I have notebooks and photos from other destinations yet to be written about—I’m sure they will surface eventually!

5. Do you have any interesting stories of how you came up with a storyline or character?

I’m always amazed how I manage to come up with an actual story from a random moment that sparks a little something-something! With Captured in Frame, I mentioned that I was staying with my sister in that serene English village and really wanted to set a novel there but needed that spark to set things in motion. So, one dark, rainy evening I saw (in the figment of my overactive imagination) a huge, drenched, grizzly man lit up by a flash of lightening outside my sister’s French doors. Charming turned chilling in an instant and my suspense brain started figuring out who would come to this village and why—and what could possibly go wrong? (You’ll have to read the book to find out…)

6. Have any of your characters done or said something unexpected?

Absolutely. They surprise me constantly! I am a plotter, so before I write my first draft I have a pretty solid framework of what will happen and when. Of course, I allow flexibility and freedom to go with the flow and I’ll often find a character doing something totally unexpected. Without giving away any spoilers, in Captured in Frame, I had planned for a certain character to have a murky past with questionable choices, but I was shocked and rather appalled when it all played out! Of course, I was also rubbing my hands together with glee because the suspense heightened to a whole new level—and now even I was scared for my protagonist…

7. Do you ever start writing the next book in your head when you're working on a current novel?

Ideally, I try to not get engrossed in my next book until I finish the main revisions of a current novel, although that was tricky the time my publisher released three novels in twelve months—which I would not recommend for one’s sanity!

Inevitably, thoughts and ideas will come to me for a future book, especially if I’m writing a series, so I’ll keep a separate book document where I can dump everything and allow those ponderings to percolate and take shape. I think the fear of forgetting plagues most of us, so it’s a huge comfort to know I’ve got those gems jotted down for potential future use.

For this current Bite of Betrayal series, I just submitted book 2 to my publisher and so now I get to weave the words for book 3… stay tuned!
